Hi Nike Fam!
As an organization, Skate Like a Girl would like to say THANK YOU for your ongoing support and participation with us. You make our community and culture truly magical! We also wanted to acknowledge that we have been able to step into a new era in the last year thanks to Nike’s support. Major milestones included hosting regular Women & Trans sessions in Seattle, Portland, and the SF Bay Area, welcoming skaters from around the globe in the largest Wheels of Fortune event weekend to date, providing a health insurance option for our Directors, serving over 12,000 people, and so much more.
As a participant and supporter, you may be curious about how Covid-19 is impacting us as an organization. On March 20th we made the call to suspend all programming until further notice, effectively laying off all of our frontline program facilitators and putting us at a loss financially due to fee-based programs being cancelled. Beyond Spring, we are currently at a large risk facing the potential for all summer camp programming to be cancelled, which employs a seasonal staff team of nearly 50 individuals, and is our largest source of revenue. The revenue generated from summer camps allows us to do year round outreach to communities in need through weekly free programs with community partners, week-long camps, scholarships, and more.
Although Coronavirus has made things difficult, we refuse to let it stop us in serving our mission. Our 4 Up2Us Sports Americorps coaches are working on digital engagement by hosting weekly Virtual WT Skate Sessions, conducting live interviews with pro skaters and community members, filming and editing trick tip videos featuring women and/or trans skaters, and more. Our 6 Directors are busy working on backend planning and organizing, including how our program models will inevitably have to shift to prioritize public health in the future and connecting with the broader skate community through the Good Push Alliance.
As you may know, Nike is offering a 2X matching opportunity for employees -- that’s you! If you can afford to, we invite you to give to Skate Like a Girl at this time, so we can ensure our organization can remain a community resource for years to come. No amount is too small and every dollar makes a difference.

Here is an idea of what your dollars can support:
- $45 trains one volunteer in “Skate Facilitation” and “Creating Inclusive Spaces”, ensuring our participants are run by mentors who make them feel safe both physically and emotionally
- $90 adds one set of gear, including a skateboard, helmet, and pads, to our inventory, so that equipment is not a barrier for participation in our programs
- $180 will send one child to a half-day skateboarding camp to make friends, connect with caring adults, and progress on and off the board
- $360 offers one scholarship to full-day skate camp, giving one low-income skater a safe place to be a kid during the summer months
